In the seminal film Midnight Express, Brad Davis plays an idealistic American  tourist who gets imprisoned in a Turkish Prison after a botched smuggling attempt. He just needed a smarter smuggling technique.
To the untrained eye these look like ordinary Babushka dolls.....

SKULL

Dear Jacob

1. Find a high quality skull to affix your crystals. I used a resin skull from Corky Saint Clair ($25Au)
2.  Source some crystals. I got mine from Ebay.com.au.
3.Carefully stick your crystals around the surface of the skull.
4. Use smaller crystals around areas of detail such as the bridge of the nose.
5. Finish your crystal skull by placing a large crystal on its forehead. If you have followed my instructions properly it should end up looking like this:

How pretty is Brisbane? We are having heaps of fun at the Brisbane Finders Keepers. Our stall turned out really well. It's not as manic as the Sydney Finders Keepers, but it's just a more laid back city. 

The Brisbane Finders Keepers is in the Old Museum, which is a beautiful building in a lush garden setting. 

The main things I have noticed:

a. demographically, there are more emos and goths in Brisbane than any other city in Australia.

b. I haven't seen a single top knot girl 

c. chelsea boots aren't big here

d. people don't jaywalk

COLOUR

Lately I’ve been really drawn to bright colours and lots of colour in the same piece. I saw this painting I loved by Joe Flynn at the Show Off exhibition at Brood Box Gallery

Some people couldn’t see what it was but if you stood from it at the right distance it was easy to see the face in it. Squinting also helped.

I spoke to Joe in his space at Blender Studios.

Corky Blog: I loved your painting with the dots at the exhibition. Who is in the painting?

Joe: Maddy. She used to hang out in the studio. She had a space over there. (gestures toward area near staircase)

Corky Blog: how did you get the dots on the paper? Were they sprayed on?

Joe: No. It’s dye. Each drop is placed on the paper

Corky Blog: Oh.
The dye placed on the paper bleeds out unevenly giving the painting a shimmering effect that I really liked. Can you tell me do you grid up pieces like this in photoshop?

Joe: No. I guess I could do it like that but I do it by eye.

When you watch a film and a female character  cuts her own hair you know that this is either a sign of madness or a gateway to empowerment. The logic suggested is that by shedding this outward display of femininity some kind of power is gained.

The montage above is from The Accused. Jodie Foster's character Sarah cuts her own hair after losing her court case. This is a pivotal scene in the film as Sarah is emboldened by her personal makeover to continue with her quest for justice. It's as if she can't be taken seriously as beautiful woman.

Another way of reading this is as an act of penance. Sarah is shown as being  promiscuous and flirtatious. Her self inflicted punishment is a loss of her beauty and power as a female. This trope of punishing sexually powerful women has been repeated endlessly in film history.

DREAMY

I keep having dreams that we aren't ready for Brisbane Finders Keepers. Now the dreams are getting conflated with being a contestant on Master Chef which makes it really confusing. In the last dream I was microwaving pizza and counting boxes of silver necklaces at the same time; the other contestants were amazed at my technique.

Maybe I just wanted pizza?

There was also the part where I was marching around telling my team to 'step up and give 110%'.

I felt quite emotional watching it, remembering how crazy that night was.

Doing design markets is fun but lots of work. It's kinda like putting on a show. We are doing the Brisbane Finders Keepers on the 26th of June and MarkIt Design Market at Fed Square July 11 and the Big One - Life InStyle August 9, 10, 11, 12.
