DOLL
In the seminal film Midnight Express, Brad Davis plays an idealistic American tourist who gets imprisoned in a Turkish Prison after a botched smuggling attempt. He just needed a smarter smuggling technique.
To the untrained eye these look like ordinary Babushka dolls.....
...but in actuality they are ingeniously designed to split open to conceal any number of contraband substances. Enamelled Babushka doll with hidden compartment. Available from Corky Saint Clair $15 |

I really like these new crystal skulls I keep seeing in latest release films. I was wondering if you could give me any tips to making my own?
Thanks

NORTH
From burnished and buffed |
How pretty is Brisbane? We are having heaps of fun at the Brisbane Finders Keepers. Our stall turned out really well. It's not as manic as the Sydney Finders Keepers, but it's just a more laid back city.
The Brisbane Finders Keepers is in the Old Museum, which is a beautiful building in a lush garden setting.
The main things I have noticed:
a. demographically, there are more emos and goths in Brisbane than any other city in Australia.
b. I haven't seen a single top knot girl
c. chelsea boots aren't big here
d. people don't jaywalk
Here is a special behind the scene shot, exclusive for readers of corkysaintclair.blogpot.com

COLOUR
Lately I’ve been really drawn to bright colours and lots of colour in the same piece. I saw this painting I loved by Joe Flynn at the Show Off exhibition at Brood Box Gallery
Some people couldn’t see what it was but if you stood from it at the right distance it was easy to see the face in it. Squinting also helped.
I spoke to Joe in his space at Blender Studios.
Corky Blog: I loved your painting with the dots at the exhibition. Who is in the painting?
Joe: Maddy. She used to hang out in the studio. She had a space over there. (gestures toward area near staircase)
Corky Blog: how did you get the dots on the paper? Were they sprayed on?
Joe: No. It’s dye. Each drop is placed on the paper
Corky Blog: Oh.
The dye placed on the paper bleeds out unevenly giving the painting a shimmering effect that I really liked. Can you tell me do you grid up pieces like this in photoshop?
Joe: No. I guess I could do it like that but I do it by eye.
Below is a new work Joe is working on - a stunning portrait of General Braddock.
Show Off exhibition at
Brood Box Gallery
8 Rankin Lane
Melbourne

HAYLEY
Check it out my friend Hayley got interviewed by the Age. Hayley writes on her blog:
"It's been a very fat positive week for me. I was interviewed and photographed for an article in The Age newspaper about my thoughts on plus size issues and the current focus in the media. I was also asked by the editor at Fashion Journal magazine to style a plus size editorial for the magazine, which was my dream come true"

CUT
STERLING SILVER SCISSOR PENDANT WITH MOVING BLADES. You probably can't cut your own hair but they would be fun to play with.
Available from Corky Saint Clair $65Au
When you watch a film and a female character cuts her own hair you know that this is either a sign of madness or a gateway to empowerment. The logic suggested is that by shedding this outward display of femininity some kind of power is gained.
The montage above is from The Accused. Jodie Foster's character Sarah cuts her own hair after losing her court case. This is a pivotal scene in the film as Sarah is emboldened by her personal makeover to continue with her quest for justice. It's as if she can't be taken seriously as beautiful woman.
Another way of reading this is as an act of penance. Sarah is shown as being promiscuous and flirtatious. Her self inflicted punishment is a loss of her beauty and power as a female. This trope of punishing sexually powerful women has been repeated endlessly in film history.

DREAMY
I keep having dreams that we aren't ready for Brisbane Finders Keepers. Now the dreams are getting conflated with being a contestant on Master Chef which makes it really confusing. In the last dream I was microwaving pizza and counting boxes of silver necklaces at the same time; the other contestants were amazed at my technique.
Maybe I just wanted pizza?
There was also the part where I was marching around telling my team to 'step up and give 110%'.

RABBIT
Dear Sarah
I am posting this for you because I think you would like it
Love Christopher-Hussein
PS ....and this one too
"Serce died today. He was a very healthy bunny, but too curious. Always escaping from his cage and this time he went to the backyard and the big dogs attacked him because they're jealous about their space. I hope the flying bunny is in a better place, in the heaven of the flying bunnies."

MARKET
The Finders Keepers - Making It Happen from kodamapixel on Vimeo.
THIS VIDEO IS AMAZING. ESPECIALLY AT THE LAST 30 SECONDS.
I felt quite emotional watching it, remembering how crazy that night was.
If you freeze frame through it you can see Louis walking through the shot at 1:27.
Doing design markets is fun but lots of work. It's kinda like putting on a show. We are doing the Brisbane Finders Keepers on the 26th of June and MarkIt Design Market at Fed Square July 11 and the Big One - Life InStyle August 9, 10, 11, 12.

CRYSTAL
Crystal Brass Knuckles ( I am going to realign your chakras mother******! by Debra Baxter.
Baxter says: "I have been fascinated with crystals since high school where I did a [talk] about their potential powers. Explaining how my grandpa who was an electrical engineer made a quarts crystal radio utilizing the "vibrations" of quarts.... crystals do have energy and powers. They seem to amplify what is already there. Crystal Brass Knuckles ( I am going to realign your chakras mother******!) is dealing [with] this, the dichotomy of a weapon and healing device in one...."

CAPE
I WANT THIS HUNTING TARTAN CAPE. I would wear it with my handmade hunting boots,
Fisherman's cape by Woolrich Mills. From their Winter/Fall 010 Range designed by Daiku Suzuki. Suzuki has drawn from their tradition of Hudson stripes, herringbone and hunting tartans but had them knitted with a modern palette of black, blue and charcoal.

Nina says:
"I’ve always been interested in drawing people and portraying weird people and creepy people and both ideas sort of worked well together. The whole ‘we’re only human’, ‘I’m only human’, ‘you’re only human’ excuse worked well as ‘we’re only mammal’…I thought."
