SYDNEY

I don't think you could be depressed in Sydney, there is so much intense sunlight. The whole city is swimming with pastels and primary colours. Yeah, it's kinda garish but coming from Melbourne which seems to be coloured from a palette of grey, black and brown, the chromatic landscape of Sydney is refreshing.


We had crazy fun at Finders Keepers Market. It was totally packed out. I kinda felt like I was tripping the first two hours - there were just so many people racing around to find craft bargains and masterpieces. There was a really nice vibe there - I think people are just more friendly in Sydney?


We designed cool display cases but they weren't finished on time so we ended up improvising with some planks of wood, some tins of beans and some black duct tape. It ended up looking pretty good.




It was so manic + intense + fun but ultimately a bit wearying talking to that many people. By the second day I spent a lot of time staring into the middle distance.

I got this super sweet teeshirt by Eleventh Our, with the new bird skull motif that is everywhere. I love the spurting, shaded 3D bursts of colours. Its a digital print, which explains the vivid colours. We'll see how it washes.

PS...The 'new birdcage' is the 'seaside bunt' it was everywhere at Finders Keepers.

I saw this on the opening night and thought it was cool but later I saw it from a block away, through a carpark and it was the most arresting sight - it transforms the exterior of the Michael Koro Gallery (110 Franklin Street, Melbourne) into a giant, twitching face. The moving facial features flutter and loop creating a mesmerising visual experience.

BUNT

I like this 'Seaside Bunt Necklace' by Tatty Devine. Triangles really are 'the new owl' of craft.

I'm not really a fan of the brooch (a collaboration with artist Rob Ryan)  on the left - it has too many words on it and the colours aren't very cute. Also I would never wear anything that had the words 'tea', 'mashed potato' or 'angel' on it.

ANIMAL

I love this snake ring by David Neale - a gold smith living and working in Melbourne.

Q: Why the anthropomorhic eye?
A: It gives it a mythic quality

It looks like it'd stretch and give as your finger moves which would make it fun to wear.

His work is stocked at Gallery Funaki. He seems to have a whole menagerie of animals including this stag and ox pin.

ROLLY

This has been a long time coming - Rolly the Robot in 3D. Yes, you can finally experience Rolly in one extra dimension of pure silver-y sweetness.

Check out this scary enamelled brooch I bought from Lazy Oaf. Kinda looks like something Jean-Michel Basquiat might have come up with if he had gotten into accessory design instead of smack.

Lazy Oaf have some really cute teeshirts too....although they seem to really like plastisol ink, which isn't the nicest feeling ink in the world (and not so good for the environment either. Tsk tsk).

I got myself this Aztec teeshirt - how sweet will that look under a jacket?


PS the gear from Lazy Oaf arrived in record time. I was really impressed by their customer service and packaging

Corky Saint Clair is making the epic journey to Olde Sydney Towne to represent Melbourne at the Finders Keepers market next Friday and Saturday (May 7 and 8).
